Fly Casting with Captain Levardo

Photo and video service with talbot's adventures, tURKS AND caicos

Hey there anglers! Captain Levardo here. Let me share some insider tips on fly casting and conservation that’ll help you make the most of our world-class bonefishing here in Turks and Caicos.

Fly-line Management: First things first – managing your fly line is key, especially on windy days. Keep it organized on the bow deck or coiled in the boat. Have about a rod’s length of line ready to go, and you’ll be set for some great casting.

The Double Haul Technique: This is the bread and butter of bonefishing. It’s all about presenting that fly just right. Think of it like doing a smooth hula hoop motion as you roll out your leader. I’ll be right there to guide you through it.

Casting Clock and Distances: Accuracy is everything in bonefishing. Use your rod like a clock hand, aiming for different hours depending on where you want to cast. Pay attention to the wind and the boat’s position – it’ll help you nail that perfect presentation.

Stripping Fly Line: You’ve got to match your strip to how the fish are behaving. Long strips for quick retrieves, medium to entice them in, and short, gentle strips for when they’re being finicky. It’s all about reading the fish.

Strip Setting and Line Management: When a bonefish takes your fly, it’s showtime. Keep that line tight with a smooth strip set. Let the fish run if it wants to, but keep steady pressure. Reel in smoothly when you can – it’s a bit of a dance between you and the fish.

Landing and Handling: When you’re bringing in a bonefish, remember – we’re here to appreciate these beauties, not harm them. Keep the fish in the water as much as possible. Hold your rod low and remove the hook gently. It’s all about respect for these incredible creatures.

Reviving and Releasing: Before letting the bonefish go, make sure it’s good and ready. Hold it gently in the water, moving it back and forth to get water flowing over its gills. When it’s ready, it’ll shoot off like a rocket. That’s the best part – watching them swim away strong.

Here in Turks and Caicos, we’re blessed with some of the best bonefishing waters in the world. Our mangroves and flats are teeming with life, and the sight of a bonefish tailing in crystal clear water – well, it’s something you’ve got to see to believe.

We take conservation seriously here. It’s catch-and-release all the way, which is why our fishery is so healthy. It’s about enjoying the sport while making sure it’s here for generations to come.

So come on down and join us at Talbot’s Adventures. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or it’s your first time chasing bones, we’ll show you the magic of fly fishing in paradise. The turquoise waters are calling – let’s go fishing
